Tooting Bec, London is a district in the London Borough of Wandsworth. The area's name comes from the Old English word "tōt", which means "outlying farmstead" or "outlying grange". Bec is named after is named after the Benedictine abbey of Bec in Normandy.

The abbey of Bec was founded by William the Conqueror, and at one point owned a large tract of land in Upper Tooting. The abbey was founded in 1034, and became a popular place of pilgrimage for its healing wells. In the life of the Conqueror, Richard de Tonebridge gave the abbey his land in Upper Tooting, establishing a grange or small priory.

It was once a rural village, but as with many other parts of London, it has become more urbanized over time. And by 1901, Tooting Bec had become a popular residential area due to its proximity to central London
